One by one, the challenges get conquered…

Posted by Helen King on Friday 16th January 2015

I overcame another challenge yesterday – I went on the radio for the first time.  I’ve always had a ‘thing’ about ‘going live’. I’m conscious of my welsh accent and my little foibles. When you hear yourself on the radio, everything seems exaggerated, at least for me anyway.  You find it hard to see the big picture, just noticing the faults with your performance.

Anyway, I went on the radio ( – it was just a local community station, nothing fancy, and I loved it!  I was on for an hour chatting to two lovely presenters about togetherfriends, the importance of friendship to women as well as the issues around loneliness and isolation.

I know my stuff, so I shouldn’t have been worried, buy you still have to overcome your fears, you still have to take the bull by the horns and be brave.

And I did it, I did something I thought I’d never do.  It was all down to the presenters really, they made me feel relaxed and were interested in what I had to say.  And actually, it was quite easy.  I’ve spent the last 3 years thinking about friendship and how important it is to a person’s wellbeing, so it came naturally for me to talk about a subject that I had given a lot of thought to.

My fears were just in my head. You can make up fears and overdramatize them. You can worry for nothing when generally things are a lot easier than you expect.

So now I can go on the radio. I can chat about togetherfriends intelligently and the issues around friendship and loneliness.

The website has been amazing for me. There have been so many firsts.   Setting up the website, marketing, blogging, learning about social media and now radio have all been new to me.  And I’m loving it.   There’s nothing like learning something new and then feeling proud.  Don’t get me wrong. I’m still a beginner. And I’ll never ever be one of those internet geeks who can turn their hand to anything techy.  I know the website’s got a long way to go to.  Getting the word out is the hardest thing when you are a new business. But my members love the site. They love the fact that they can meet other women just like them. So while my members feel like that and believe that I am offering them something of benefit, I’ll keep on doing what I’m doing. I’ll keep on offering women friendship.
